A man, a ladder, and sixty-five years.
Frank Stevens climbed onto his first roof in 1960, at eighteen years old. The company he started thirteen years later is still in the family, and still run the same way.
How it started
In 1960 Frank Stevens went to work for Jones Brothers, a roofing and plumbing company in Central Valley that had been going since the late 1800s. He was eighteen. He learned the trade the only way anybody really learns it, which is on a roof, in whatever weather that day happened to bring.
In 1973 he opened Frank Stevens Roofing. In 1999 it became Frank Stevens & Sons Roofing, Inc. Fifty-plus years later it is still family-owned and family-operated, and it still does the same work: replacement, repair, restoration and maintenance of commercial, industrial, institutional and residential roofs, low-slope and steep.
Built-up hot tar. Single-ply membranes — EPDM rubber, TPO, PVC. Asphalt shingles. Real and imitation slate. Cedar shake. Metal, both standing seam panel and metal shingles. If it goes on a roof in the Northeast, this company has installed it, usually more times than it can count.

Then they stay on it. Both are hands-on through the whole job, physically overseeing that the work is done correctly from start to finish, exactly as Frank did from the beginning of the business.
It has never made anyone's life easy. It has proved to be a winning formula for continued success and customer satisfaction through all of these years.

Jim McCormick
Residential division · Frank's son-in-lawMore than twenty-five years in the trade, and the person who will come look at your house. Jim heads residential — shingle, slate, cedar and metal — and gives you the recommendation he would give his own family, because in this company that distinction does not really exist.
Our own shop
If the part doesn't exist, we make it.
We run a fully operational sheet metal shop and can custom-fabricate components for any job — copper valleys and ridges, copings, counter-flashing, chimney pans, drip edge, and one-off details for historic buildings where nothing off the shelf will match what was there.
It means we are not waiting on a supplier to approximate something. The metal on your roof was made for your roof.

Frank's original logo — the hand-lettered cloud, the three kinds of building, and a family keeping dry under an umbrella — has been on this company's trucks and letterhead for most of its life.
We have cleaned it up for signs and screens, but we did not throw the idea away. It was right the first time: somebody has to keep the rain out.
